THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE HOLIDAY STRESS

This year, I made a promise to myself that I will do less to enjoy the holidays more. This also means decorating the house earlier in the season even if I don’t feel it’s too early. There have been years when I decorated later in December and felt I didn’t enjoy the holidays as they passed too quickly.

As you approach December, you may feel the stress of the holidays and all the things that you may feel you must complete.  Tell yourself there is a way to enjoy the holidays and this year, you can change the activities you do to enjoy the time leading up to the holidays more by doing less.

What are three things I can do daily to enjoy the holidays? The list to enjoy the holidays is pretty simple. First, to make the gift list and finish the shopping within ten days of the holidays; second, to exercise or do something physical daily (whether that’s a walk, lift weights, meditate or yoga); and third, to eat simple foods.

SHOPPING WITH A LIST AND STICK TO IT FOR STRESS FREE DAY

My first step is to make a shopping list, and spend two hours going over the list, my budget and what I’m doing for each person on my list. The time planned on my calendar is more productive for other things if I stick to this goal and it’s written down. Deviating doesn’t serve a purpose since it undoes this well laid plan for less stress and more time.

GET GROUNDED AND EXERCISE TO RELIEVE STRESS

My second step is to exercise which seems so simple since I do this the remainder of the year, but somehow during the holidays the exercise routine gets sidetracked. I do make a special effort to walk, do yoga, meditate or listen to inspiring music or cds every day to keep the stress level lower and calming.

SIMPLE HEALTHY MEALS  HELP RELIEVE STRESS

The third step is to eat simple nutritious meals. It’s easy to decide on comfort foods and then get lost in having delicious desserts or holiday treats. Once a week is good to treat yourself to a sweet treat but when the once a week becomes more frequent and the exercise and meditation aren’t done, I feel there is lack of balance. Simple nutritious meals are lighter, whether it’s soup and vegetables on the side or vegetables with rice and small amount of protein. Lighter meals feel better and I have more energy and can sleep better.
Today, the decorating is completed, the shopping list and purchases are half completed and the meals are becoming much easier. There are still two weeks to go until the holidays and I’m feeling enriched and relaxing with ease!
